Understanding Land Surveying: The Profession that Shapes the World We Live In

Land Administration Services

Land surveying probably isn’t something we ever think about, but it is a background activity that supports much of everything in the world around us. Every road traveled, building entered, and property bought or sold, begins with the accurate drawings and experience of a land surveyor.

Land surveying is just that; it is a method of understanding the earth; its shape, boundaries, elevation, and surface features. Surveyors often use the most advanced technology available to create accurate representations of land, such as total stations, drones, GPS and laser scanners. The human aspect, however, is still a very large component of surveying. Surveyors are out in the field and travel well into wooded areas, across open fields, and into busy roadways, confirming everything is accounted for.

In the end, a properly executed land survey saves people from making costly mistakes. It provides people with confirmation that building foundations are in the right places, roads follow the safest possible route, and property boundaries are verified and fair. Without land surveying, planning and construction would be little better than a game of darts in the dark.

Above all, surveying is the way the world of technology meets the world of trust. People will depend on surveyors to provide them more than the current conditions, but an understanding, integrity, and sound assessment of the conditions and surfaces wherever they go. Surveying is where exacting measures meet accountability, by quietly channeling the spaces we live, work, and raise our families.
